Welcome to Year 3.
Welcome to Year 3! Our children have settled in fantastically and are now becoming confident learners who are growing and flourishing as part of the Pear Tree family. They are our Pear Tree Super Heroes who live by our Super Hero Code of being Ready, Respectful and Responsible.
We are looking forward to all of the adventures we shall go on over the course of the year.

Autumn 1 2021
We have been very busy this half term settling in to our new routines. We have been learning about the natural world around us and the impact humans have upon the environment.
As a part of our Oracy Assemblies, we have been discussing what Oracy is and what Trust, Care and Grow means to us.
We enjoy healthy competition in Year 3 and are having a competition to see which class reads the most books. You can help us by listening to us read every day.
During our Science lessons, we have been learning about plants and animals including humans. We conducted an experiment to find out how long it would take our cress seeds to grow.
For our Design and Technology project this half term, we have designed, created and evaluated our own plant pots.
As a part of our Geography learning, we learned about the resources that can be found in the Arctic as well as learning about what Global Warming is and the impact it has upon our planet.
During our Music lessons, we learned about tempo, pitch and volume within pieces of music. We evaluated our learning at the end of this cycle of learning.
As a part of our Religious Education lessons, we have been learning about temptation. We looked at different scenarios and how we could respond to them.
During our PSHE lessons, we discussed how we could show respect.
We have been learning about the skills historians need during our History lessons. We created a Poplet of questions we would like to ask Queen Victoria.
As a part of our English learning, we have learned about different types of poems then used the Flaming Katy plant as a stimulus to write our own.
As the term went on, we learned more about the natural world and the impact humans are having upon it. We were inspired by the speeches delivered by Greta Thunberg, Severn Suzuki and Sir David Attenborough to create our own speeches to help encourage people to look after our planet.

Learning From Home
Sometimes, we may need to continue our learning from home. Each child has their own log in information for Showbie, Purple Mash, Bug Club, Times Table Rock Stars and Spelling Shed. New learning shall be updated on Showbie every week. It shall also be uploaded on here so it can be accessed without logging in. The activities can be completed on paper or in the Jigsaw book without needing to print out any sheets.
Each half term, we shall create a homework mat with activities for children to complete. These are to be completed in the red Jigsaw books.

This term, we have been learning about life in the Victorian times. The children arrived in school Monday 16th November where they participated in Victorian lessons. They wrote with chalk, chanted their times tables, took part in technical drawing lessons and needlecraft lessons.

We have had a busy start to our school year. We have learned all about parts of plants, the world around us and talked about the people who are special to us. We also had a visit from nurses at the Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust who helped us learn about the importance of washing our hands properly. We found it fascinating to look at our hands under the UV light to see if they were actually clean.

2019 - 2020
The 2019 - 2020 academic year was a very interesting year for us all. We spent half of the year learning in school and half of the year learning from home. We all learned so much about ourselves, about each other and about the world we live in. These are just some of the things we learned about during this year.

Welcome to our Reading Pets
We would like to welcome Sadie, Marcel and Trevour to the Year 3 team as our Reading Pets. They shall go home with a different child each weekend and spend the week on their desk. The Reading Pets love being read to. We can't wait to read about their adventures.
Spring 1 and 2
Our Stone Age to Iron Age topics were launched with a fantastic experience day. We discovered what prehistory is, learned about the roles of hunters and gatherers, dissected Stone Age poo and built our own version of Stonehenge.
During this topic. we learned about how tools and weapons were used, how fires were used to keep warm and cook food and how homes changed throughout the ages. We also learned about why the Bronze Age is called the Bronze Age.
During our Geography lessons, we learned about why people settled in certain areas and how the Giant's Causeway was created.
We learned about the different rocks and soils and how they are made.

Autumn 2 in Year 3
We have had a very interesting half term. We returned to school after the half term break to a performance of Robin Hood by a visiting theatre company called M & M Productions. This was followed by our Perseverance Day. We learned about famous people who have persevered before participating in activities to help us understand what it means to persevere.
On Monday 11th November, we learned about Remembrance Day. We learned about victims of war and the impact of war on people, families, communities and countries.
Our big question this half term was 'Why is light important?'. We learned about what light is, why it is important, how light travels, how to keep safe in the dark as well as how to keep safe in the sun. As part of our learning, we made sun dials to help us tell the time using the sun. We also made sunglasses after learning about transparent, translucent and opaque materials.
We learned about how to keep ourselves and others safe on the roads during Road Safety Week.
Our key text was 'The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark'. We wrote letters to a child who was afraid of the dark to reassure her she does not need to be afraid. We also wrote reports on what light is. We used the knowledge we gained during our topic lessons to help us.
During our Maths lessons, we learned how to multiply numbers using concrete, pictorial and abstract methods.
On Monday 9th December and Wednesday 11th December, the children walked to St. Augustine's Church to Experience Christmas. They learned about why Christmas is important to Christians and why it is celebrated. They thoroughly enjoyed this visit.
The afternoon of Tuesday 10th December brought us our very first Winter Warmer. The children were very proud to be able to buy and sell the chocolate lollypops they had made. Many parents came to enjoy a movie with their child.
Our Learning during Autumn 1
During our first term we learned about the Victorians. Our big question was, How have the Victorians influenced my life today? We learnt about who the Victorians were, what Victorian Derby was like, famous people from the Victorian period, Victorian inventions and how they have influenced our lives today.
In English, we were reading Fair's Fair by Leon Garfield. We wrote descriptions of settings. You could help your child by encouraging them to describe what they can see.
During our Maths lessons we learnt about the place value of digits within three digit numbers. Please let your child handle small amounts of money, let them help pay for items and work out the change they will get when they have been shopping.
Please listen to your child read for at least 15 minutes a day. Quiz your child on their times tables and help them practice their spellings.
Homework shall be given out on a Friday and is due back on a Wednesday.
How have the Victorians influenced my life today?
The children have thoroghly enjoyed the launch of our topic. By bringing it to life through our Victorian Experience Day, the children have been able to participate in a typical Victorian school day, from the lessons to some of the punishments. They even took part in Victorian PE drills and learned to play the Hop Scotch. The adults looked very stern and very scary.
By becoming 'history detectives' the children were able to identify signs of Victorian homes on the buildings around school. We were amazed at how much evidence there is of Victorian architecture in Pear Tree.
Roald Dahl Day
Friday 13th September was Roald Dahl Day. The staff were dressed up as extras from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The children read the book and they dove deeper into the text, identifying vocabulary that inspired them. They finished off the day by learning the song of the Oompa Loompas.
Attendance Hero Day
Attendance Hero Day is a day that is selected by Mrs Burdis when all of the children at school can have an extra break time. The year 3 children have thoroughly enjoyed their extra break times.
